I think that Kirsti is not afraid of the soldiers because they have been there all her life so she thinks it is totally normal to have them there. She also probably isn't afraid of the soldiers because she does not know that they are doing anything bad, so she thinks she has nothing to be scared of. She also doesn't know how powerful the soldiers are an that they could kill her at any moment. That is my opinion of why Kirsti isn't afraid of the soldiers. Question 2: How would you have felt if you had been Annemarie when the soldiers spoke to her? Why?
I would have felt very scared because I would be wondering if the soldiers would arrest me, shoot me, or do anything else horrible to me. I would also be scared that Kirsti would say something she shouldn't to the soldiers. That is how I would feel if I were Annemarie at that time.

Chapter 2 Questions: Question 1: Do you think that King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis? Why?
I think King Christian did the right thing because he knew that the Nazis had a much bigger army than them so if they would have fought, the Nazis would win by a lot and then he would also loose a lot of the few soldiers he had. That is why I think King Christian did the right thing when he surrendered to the Nazis. Question 2: Would you be willing to die to protect the leader of your country? Why?
Yes, I would probably die for the leader of my country because the leader does a lot of very important and kind things for the country and I think it would be nice to repay him for all the hard work he does. On the other hand, if my leader was lazy and didn't do much for the country, I would not die for him because he did not help our country at all and he does not deserve to be given another chance. Question 3: What happened to Annemarie's older sister Lise?
Annemarie's older sister, Lise, died in an accident just a little bit before her and her fiance's wedding. Question 4: How has Annemarie's family changed since the death of Lise.
Annemarie's family has changed a lot since the death of Lise. One example of that is that Lise's fiance used to be very fun-loving and silly but now that Lise was dead he wasn't as fun, and now he only stopped in and talked to them for a little bit, and always seemed in a hurry. Another example is that Papa now seems vey old and tired and he seems to always feel defeated. It must have been very hard for Annemarie's family to recover from losing Lise.
Chapter 3 Questions: Question 1: Annemarie believes that ordinary people like her don't have to be courageous. Do you agree with this idea?
No, I do not agree with this idea because I believe that all people need to be couragous because you never know what adventure or problem can be thrown your way. You can't just assume just because you are ordinary you will never need to be couragous, Question 2: What religion do the Rosens practice?
The Rosens practice the Jewish religion. Annemarie's mother does not think that they will get effected by the Nazis though. Question 3: Predict what you think will happen next in the story.
I think that next in the story, the Rosens will be found by the Nazis and get taken away to a concentration camp. Then, I think that Annemarie's family will try to get the Rosens out of the concentration camp. That is my prediction of what is coming up in the story. The title of the first chapter is "Why are you Running?" Annemarie and Ellen were running because they were racing each other to the end of the corner to practice for the races they have every Friday. The title of the second chapter is "Who is the man who rides past?" King Christian is the man who rides past. The title of the third chapter is "Where is Mrs. Hirsch?" Mrs. Hirsch's store got closed by the Germans and nobody knows where the Hirsch's went. They could have ran away from the Nazis because they were jewish, or they could have been taken away and captured by the Nazis. Question 2: The title of this chapter is "It Will Be a Long Night." Why was it a long night?
It was a long night because Ellen would stay up wondering if the she and her parents would be captured and found. It was also a long night because Annemarie and Ellen would have to stay up all night waiting to see if the Nazi soldiers would come or not. Question 3: Why does Ellen spend the night with Annemarie?
Ellen spends the night with Annemarie because the Nazis were after her and her family and she needed somewhere to stay and be safe. So, Annemarie and her family let Ellen stay with them, and then Peter took Mr. and Mrs. Rosen to somewhere else safe.

The soldiers went to the Johansen's apartment because they had heard that the Johansen's were good friends of the Rosens and they thought that the Rosens were hiding in the Johansen's apartment. 2. What do you think they expected to find?
I think that they expected to find the Rosens hiding in their apartment, but they did not. The Johansen's kept Ellen hidden very well so the Nazis did not find her. 3. Why does Annemarie tear the necklace from Ellen’s neck?
Annemarie tears the necklace from Ellen's neck because if the Nazis saw her wearing it, they would know for sure that Ellen was jewish because it had the jewish star of david on it. 4. When Papa tore the pictures from his photo album, what was he trying to prove?
Papa was trying to prove that Mama had given birth to all three of the kids because the Nazis were not falling for that Ellen was Mama's daughter.

Yes, I do think that Annemarie is very brave because the soldiers searched her whole house and questioned her but she was very courageous and did not get scared. 6. Why does Mama want to travel to Uncle Henrik’s house alone?
Mama wanted to travel to Uncle Henrik's alone because she does not want the soldiers to come back to the house and see that no one was there. If the soldiers saw that no one was home, they could get suspicious and think that the Rosens and Johansens were running away. 7. Papa and Uncle Henrik were really talking about Ellen when they were talking about "cigarettes". Papa and Uncle Henrik were talking in code because they were not sure if the soldiers were listening in on their call or not. They wanted to make sure that the Nazis did not know what they were talking about if they were listening in.

Uncle Henrik's is a good place to take a Jewish refugee because he lives far away from where the soldiers are and no one would suspect him to be hiding away a jewish person.

I felt very scared at one point in this chapter because I did not know if Kirsti would tell the soldier that Ellen was jewish or not. I also felt like I was actually there with them the way the author was describing the setting with the flowers, the train, and all the houses.

Mama and Annemarie are frightened when Kirsti decides to talk to the soldiers on the train because they are not sure if Kirsti will tell the soldiers that Ellen is Jewish and celebrating her New Year or not.

Chapter 7 1. How do Ellen and Annemarie feel as they explore Gilleleje?
Ellen and Annemarie felt so free as they were standing overlooking the big sea of Gillelege. The felt as if it was one of the most beautiful things they had ever seen in their life. 2. Why is this visit different for Annemarie than other times she visited Uncle Henrik?
This visit is different than the other times Annemarie visited Uncle Henrik because this time they had to hide Ellen instead of just being able to just hang out at Gilleleje. 3. Describe Uncle Henrik and Mama’s relationship.
Uncle Henrik and Mama's relationship is very close. They love and care for each other very much. They also liked to tease each other about Uncle Henrik not getting married. They have a very close bond.

I think that the mourners are some townspeople that are friends with Uncle Henrik. 2. How does Uncle Hunrik explain to Annemarie why he and Mama lied to her about Great –aunt Birte?
Uncle Henrik explains that he and mama lied to her because they thought that annemarie would be braver if she did not know everything that was going on. 3. Find a line from this chapter that shows Annemarie is maturing.
This is one line that shows that Annemarie is maturing. 'Annemarie and Mama looked at each other for a long time and said nothing. In that moment, with that look, they became equals.' I think that those two sentences show Annemarie is maturing because if she was an equal with her mom, that must mean she is as mature as her mom.

I think that most of the people were very shocked and scared during the wake. I dont think they expected the soldiers to come running into their "funeral". 3. How does Mama keep the soldier from opening the casket?

I think that the significance of the title of this book is that when the psalm said to "number the stars one by one", Annemarie did not know what that meant. I think it will be important later on in the story because I think that she will figure out out what it means throught it.

There are blankets and jackets in the casket. There is no one in it. 2. Why did Peter insist upon giving the baby some medicine?
Peter insisted on giving the baby some medicine because he did not want to take any chances to have the baby cry and get discovered by the Nazi soldiers. 3. One possible theme for this novel is that it is easier for people to be brave if they do not know everything. Use an incident that happened in this novel to prove this. One incident from this novel that proves that it is easier to be brave when you dont know everything is when uncle henrik and mama lied to annemarie. It proves it because annemarie was braver when she did not know there really wasn't a great-aunt Birte. 4. Find a section of this chapter that shows Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree child she once was. In one section of this chapter, it shows that Annemarie no longer thinks of herself as the carefree girl she once was was when she stayed very brave when she found out that Ellen, her family, and some other jews were going to escape to sweeden. If she still acted like a carefree girl maybe she would've cried or done something else childish, but since she is maturing, she stayed calm and acted very maturely.

No, I do not think she will because Annemarie will try the best she can to not have anyone hear her so no soldiers would come and discover her. 2. What observations about waiting does Annemarie make in this chapter?
Annemarie makes some observations that waiting can be very difficult if you are waiting for a loved one to come back from someplace. 3. Why does Annemarie worry about her mother’s safety
Annemarie worries about her mother's safety because she does not want anything bad to happen to her mother like having the soldiers shoot her or take her to a concentration camp. If she would loose her mother, that would mean she would have no one to love and care for her except her father, but he is all the way back in Copenhagen.

I think Annemarie volunteers to take the packet to Uncle Henrik because she knows it is very important and since her mother has a broken ankle she knows nobody can take it to Uncle Henrik except her. She also did it because she knows that since she can run very fast, she would be able to get it to Uncle Henrik very quickly. 2. Why doesn’t Mama tell Annemarie what is in the basket?
I think Mama doesnt tell Annemarie whats in the basket because mama probably thinks that annemarie will be braver if she does not know everything.

In the story, Annemarie is like Red Riding Hood and the soldiers and the dogs are like the wolf. 2. In this chapter we see that Annemarie is confronted with reality and begins to less of a child. What is the reality she confronts?
The reality that Annemarie confronts is that even if you are trying to do something nice or the right thing to do, there is still always a danger such as being captured or killed, that you can get into. For example, when Annemarie was trying to do the right thing by delivering the packet,but she got stopped by the Nazi soldiers and they almost didnt believe that Annemarie was delivering Uncle Henrik's lunch. If the soldiers wouldnt have fallen for the lie, Annemarie could have been hurt, or worse.

I think the soldiers treated Annmarie very meanly and unfairly because they just grabbed the basket out her hand and started taking her things. 2. List three times when the German soldiers are rude to Annemarie.
One was when she was racing on the streets and they yelled at her to "halte". Two was when they came into the Johansen's apartment and started accusing her and her family of hiding the Rosens. Peter died by getting found by the Nazis and then the soldiers shot him and he died. Lise really died because she was in the Resistance also and she was trying to run away from the soldiers but the soldiers just ran over her in their car and then she died. 3. - The reality that Annemarie confronts is that even if you are trying to do something nice or the right thing to do, there is still always a danger such as being captured or killed, that you can get into. For example, when Annemarie was trying to do the right thing by delivering the packet,but she got stopped by the Nazi soldiers and they almost didnt believe that Annemarie was delivering Uncle Henrik's lunch. If the soldiers wouldnt have fallen for the lie, Annemarie could have been hurt, or worse.
